Now interviewing

Controller. Own the close, then make it faster every month.

Most Controller openings ask you to run a clean close. This one asks you to own the close and keep pulling time out of it. If you have spent your career running closes and the slow parts still bother you, keep reading.

T+10T+2

Where our monthly close was, and where it is now. We are hiring Controllers who can push it further.

The role in one paragraph

We are hiring Controllers who have owned the monthly close end to end and look at the manual parts with an instinct to automate. We are not hiring a Controller who can also work with AI tools. We are hiring a builder who can also run a clean, audit-ready monthly close. That distinction is the most important thing to understand about this role.

The Controller owns the monthly close across a portfolio of growth-stage clients as part of a pod. You partner daily with the CFO Partner on your pod. They own the client relationship, you own the books behind it, and you report to our Head of Delivery. This is a hands-on seat. You are in the ledger every day, closing the books yourself and finding the next manual step to automate.

What you will own

  • Monthly close ownershipYou own the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the monthly close across your client portfolio. Accruals, reconciliations, journal entries, and ledger health are your seat. Close runs on schedule, and when something is off, you find it before the CFO Partner or the client does.
  • Technical accounting and reportingYou deliver GAAP-accurate financial statements. Revenue recognition where it matters, accounting memos when the treatment is non-obvious, and audit readiness as a default posture. You can defend your reasoning in a review and explain it to a founder without hiding behind jargon.
  • Improving the closeYou find where the close is slow, manual, or inconsistent and partner with our engineering team to automate it. You bring a Controller's eye for what should be automated, what should stay human, and where AI can compress a five-day close to a two-day one. You ship feedback, prototype workflows, and document what works so the improvement sticks.
  • Pod collaboration and client deliveryYou surface accounting issues that need client attention early, with a recommendation, and without drama. When the moment calls for you to speak directly to a client, you communicate clearly and confidently.
  • Systems and process rigorERP fluency in NetSuite, Sage, or an equivalent production ERP, with awareness of QuickBooks. Process documentation that someone else can pick up and run. You treat process debt as real debt.

The first ninety days

  1. By day 30You are closing books on your pod's clients, with the CFO Partner.
  2. By day 60You have mapped where your pod's close is slow, manual, or inconsistent, and you have picked the first thing to fix.
  3. Day 90You present an Augmented Close Proposal to the Head of Delivery: a scoped, prototyped improvement to the pod's close, with a way to measure whether it worked.

What success looks like in year one

  • Close runs on schedule and on spec across your client portfolio: accurate, audit-ready, trusted by your CFO Partner and your clients.
  • Accounting issues surface early, with recommendations. No surprises for your pod or for leadership.
  • Books are audit-ready as a default state.
  • AI-native tools are part of your daily close practice, an operating rhythm rather than an experiment.
  • At least one close, reconciliation, or reporting improvement you shipped is reused beyond your own pod.
  • You and the CFO Partner on your pod work in rhythm.

Who you are

Required

  • Owned a full monthly close end to end at a growth-stage company, on a lean finance team of one to five. The close stopped with you and you led the people running it. Title can be Controller, Accounting Manager, or equivalent.
  • Strong technical accounting. GAAP, reconciliations, accruals, and close process design. You can write a clean accounting memo when the treatment is not obvious and defend it in a review.
  • ERP fluency. NetSuite, Sage, or equivalent production ERP experience. QuickBooks awareness required; QuickBooks-only backgrounds will not clear the bar on their own.
  • Builder. You can point to a close, reconciliation, or reporting process you built or materially improved. You look at a manual step and ask why we are still doing this by hand.
  • Genuinely into AI. You already use AI tools in your own work because you want to. You follow what is happening at the frontier, experiment when new models drop, and have informed opinions on what is real versus hype.
  • Growth-stage fluency. You have built process where none existed and are comfortable with ambiguity and imperfect data.

Strongly valued

  • CPA or equivalent professional credential
  • ERP implementation or optimization experience (NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
  • Audit preparation and management experience: managed audits, not just participated in them
  • M&A integration experience
  • Multi-entity or multi-client exposure: you have held accuracy across more than one set of books at a time
  • SaaS, professional services, or other growth-stage industry exposure

How to think about this role

This is a hands-on Controller seat. It attracts Controllers who see the close as a system to be shaped and who are still happiest in the details. The Controller who thrives here knows the technical work cold and is energized by finding the next manual step to remove. Technical rigor earns the right to automate. It does not replace the need to own accuracy, timeliness, and the integrity of what leaves the pod.

If your strongest work has been maintaining what someone else built, if you are most comfortable running a close exactly the way you have always run it, or if you are looking for a seat where the process is already solved, this probably is not the right fit.

If you have always done your best work when you could shape the system you were running, when "we've always done it this way" was never a good enough answer, and when excellent work meant the books closed cleanly and the next close was a little easier than the last, we want to talk.

How we work

Till CFO is an AI-native financial services company. We embed finance teams and a modern technology stack in growth-stage companies, built and run by operators who have been in the seat. AI amplifies human judgment. It doesn't replace it. We are bootstrapped with family office capital, and every client engagement strengthens the playbooks and controls the next pod runs on.

You join one pod. You partner daily with the CFO Partner on your pod and report to the Head of Delivery. Peer Controllers on other pods are the people your process improvements are built to reach.
